wiseup09/2020 – sediments of hiphop in hardcore techno
Experience in & theory on hip-hop played a crucial part in different aspects of my ethnography and analysis on hardcore techno. This podcast will outline the role of hip-hop in hardcore techno. You will listen to the music & be guided by The DJ Producer (Luke McMillan), a pioneer of the hip-hop influenced side of the genre. He will talk about 30 years of experience in hardcore permeated & spiced up through hip-hop elements & techniques. Techno & hip-hop crossed paths as some individuals started to use hip-hop samples & turntablism techniques in gabber & hardcore. This is due to the musical background of some producers & DJs who were socialized with hip-hop as teenagers. As a consequence, they integrated their musical knowledge & techniques into hardcore. This even became a subgenre called UK hardcore with labels like Deathchant, Rebelscum, or Audio Damage who made this style popular.

Denn Pop-Kultur ist nicht statisch, sondern streitbar. Entwicklungen aufzuzeigen und zu hinterfragen ist für “die Sache selbst” wichtig. Interviews sind oft das Kernstück der Radiosendungen. In der mediatisierten Post-Postmoderne, gewinnt die Fähigkeit des “zwischen den Zeilen lesens” an Relevanz. Um “dahinter zu kommen” (to wise up) nutzt WiseUp längere Interviews, Musik oder kollagierte Hörstücke.
WiseUp! Radio is a program concearned with pop discourses and music ventures; it researches different kinds of knowledge produced in the context of music. Long interviews are often the core of the program, because WiseUp! appreciates information directly from the source. Popculture is not static but disputatious. Power lies within the documentation, because it shapes the discourses, narratives and histories of music, that are always constructed. It’s important to show and maintain its diversity!
